Capability
Class A Asbestos Removal, Contaminated Soil Excavation, Stockpile Removal, Environmental Controls, Traffic & Site Management
Site Establishment & Access Control
Establishment of a controlled work zone with exclusion fencing, asbestos signage, and a single access point; segregation of clean and contaminated zones; installation of a marker layer for truck movement; and provision of compliant decontamination facilities and procedures for personnel, vehicles, and equipment.
Asbestos Stockpile Removal
Controlled removal of existing asbestos-contaminated stockpiles (approximately 75m3 of ACM) using wet suppression techniques, with direct loading into lined trucks for off-site disposal at licensed facilities, ensuring no fibre release.
Surface ACM Removal
Stripping and removal of contaminated soil to a depth of approximately 100 mm. Continuous dust suppression and air monitoring were implemented throughout excavation and loading operations.
Waste Handling & Disposal
Segregation, containment, and transport of all asbestos-contaminated material in accordance with regulatory requirements. Use of lined trucks and approved disposal pathways to eliminate environmental and public risk.
Decontamination & Site Demobilisation
Execution of full decontamination procedures for personnel, plant, and equipment, including the use of wheel wash facilities and replacement of HEPA vacuum filters; removal and proper disposal of PPE; and final clearance inspections to verify site safety prior to demobilisation.
Sensitive Urban Environment
THE CONSTRAINTS
The site was located within a densely populated area adjacent to Holy Spirit College, requiring strict safety, noise, and dust control measures to protect students, staff, and the general public.
THE WBS SOLUTIONS
Full Class A asbestos controls were implemented, including 200-micron plastic sheeting over stockpiles, exclusion fencing with black sheeting, and real-time air monitoring to protect workers and the surrounding community, in accordance with the Environmental Protection Regulation 2019.
Existing Construction Activities
THE CONSTRAINTS
Asbestos was identified during drainage excavation, with fill material containing asbestos fragments and loose fibre bundles requiring immediate remediation. Open trenches adjacent to the contamination zone introduced additional coordination and safety constraints throughout the works.
THE WBS SOLUTIONS
Ongoing construction activities were temporarily halted to carry out remediation. Excavation was carefully coordinated to minimize interference with open trenches, ensuring safe and efficient asbestos removal.
Asbestos Contamination Exposure
THE CONSTRAINTS
The presence of friable and non-friable asbestos within both stockpiled materials and surface soils posed a high risk of airborne fibre release during handling and excavation.
THE WBS SOLUTIONS
Adopted wet removal techniques, controlled excavation sequencing, and strict compliance with the Asbestos Removal Control Plan (ARCP) to minimise fibre dispersion and ensure safe handling.
Stockpile Management
THE CONSTRAINTS
Management and removal of asbestos-contaminated stockpiles required controlled handling to prevent environmental contamination and fibre release.
THE WBS SOLUTIONS
Maintained stockpiles in a wet condition, followed by direct loading into lined trucks for immediate off-site disposal, eliminating double handling and reducing exposure risk.
Traffic and Site Constraints
THE CONSTRAINTS
Limited site access and restricted manoeuvring space required careful coordination of vehicle movements, particularly for truck ingress and egress.
THE WBS SOLUTIONS
Implemented a Vehicle Movement Plan incorporating traffic controllers, controlled reversing of lined trucks, and designated loading zones to ensure safe and efficient operations.
Cross-Contamination Control
THE CONSTRAINTS
Risk of cross-contamination between clean and contaminated zones during remediation activities.
THE WBS SOLUTIONS
Established strict segregation protocols, including designated exclusion zones, controlled access points, and a decontamination station to prevent contamination spread.
